Ethelwynne Van Eck

Ethelwynne starts with her explaining her love for gathering and making beautiful things. From knitting garments, to needle point creations and appliqué hangings, Ethelywnne’s creative expressions extend to include the designing of her own clothes. However as an artist and a collector, her focus harbours at South African and Cape Dutch art and antiques.

Like most artists, Etthelwynne did not set out to be an artist, but rather arrived at this destination. She studied Botany and Zoology at the University of Natal despite a preference of having studied Art, after which she married and temporarily moved to Swaziland. Upon her return to Johannesburg, Ethelywnne enrolled at UNISA to read for a BA, majoring in History and Art where she graduated with distinction a first respectively.

Within the same year of graduating, she enrolled at the Johannesburg School of Art, and studied Matisse’s work under Bill Ainslie.

In 1990, she started painting in earnest ad marketed flower and still life studies through the Lookout Art Gallery in Plettenberg Bay. 1992 saw collaborative efforts with Hildergard Campbell-Reid who has since migrated to London. Her advice, guidance and example were invaluable to the artist’s development. The artist also broadened her reach and started selling her art through Art and Frames in Pretoria. Carmel Art Gallery in Constantia and exhibited with Gallery At Home on many occasions with other artists.

Ethelwynne’s love for South Africa, her admiration of the exotic beauty of African women with their elegant sense of dress, has inspired the re-direction of her artistic ability to capture on canvas the many facets of these women’s lives in the performance of their daily tasks. Buyers include overseas visitors’, friends and locals who are interested in colourful still life paintings.
