Marie was born in Pretoria in 1954. Between 1972 and 1976, she studied at the University of South Africa under Karin Skawran and gained a Bachelor in Arts (FA).  She then proceeded onto Hammersmith Art School in London and studied under George Israels and Kingsley Sutton.

She has enjoyed several group exhibitions in South Africa along with one in Paris in 1967. In 1974, she had her first solo exhibition . Public commissions by Marie include a portrait of President P.W. Botha in 1982 which is currently at the Middelburg minicipality. And Portraits of Professor Hoek and Dr J Howellin 1985, which are at the University of Pretoria.

Marie is a painter of potraits, figures and still life. She works in oil, ink, watercolour, wash and pencil.
