Celebrities art auction raises R141 850

Fifty South African celebrities have agreed to each put paint to canvas in a rare show of solidarity to raise funds for Child Welfare South Africa’s flagship community-based project, Isolabantwana, meaning “Eye on the Child” and raised a significant R141 850 for the children of South Africa.

The paintings were auctioned on Monday night (17 March) at a Gala Event co-hosted by Emperors Palace and Nataniël, CWSA’s Goodwill Ambassador. The 400 glamorous guests were treated with top class entertainment by Nataniël & friends, and a splendid 3-course meal, presented on a table set to Nataniël’s exceptional standards.

The live auction of 16 paintings handled by Mr. Deon Botha from Omniland Auctioneers fetched a total of R91250 for the children of South Africa. The popular and innovative Diginamix Electronic Bidding process auctioned the 30 remaining paintings for a total of R50600.

Amongst the paintings, based on the theme of child protection, were creations from the internationally renowned painter, Catharina de Bliquy (highest sale for R23000), ultra marathon runner, Bruce Fordyce, whose unique pen sketch sold for R10 750, and a long list of well-known actors, sports starts, singers and other entertainers.

Michael Mol, MC for the evening, quite rightly named the event as a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise not only money, but awareness for all the children suffering in our country.

All proceeds from the auction and from sales of tables at the gala dinner will be utilised for the national role-out of the Eye on the Child Project. The programme is presently being implemented in 74 communities nationally. Already, more than 1440 volunteers (“eyes”) have been trained to provide a critical 24-hour a day service to protect vulnerable children at risk of abuse.

Child Welfare South Africa is a national, non-government, non-profit organisation representing 169 child welfare member organisations. Together with its affiliated member organisations Child Welfare South Africa is the biggest child protection movement in the country, protecting children, families and their care givers.
